The Person-Centered Contraceptive Counseling (PCCC) measure is a tool to evaluate the patient experience of contraceptive care, and particularly how well healthcare providers are supporting patients during the contraceptive decision-making process. It was developed with deep patient engagement, including qualitative work asking patients about their experiences with and preferences for contraceptive care. It is designed to be used by any organization that offers contraceptive counseling to its patients and can also be used to track change over time in response to interventions or other changes in care delivery. This is a critical area of attention in quality improvement given documented gaps in the quality of contraceptive counseling.
The PCCC has two current forms: a visit-specific form that can be used by healthcare agencies to assess the quality of care delivered at their sites and a retrospective version (PCCC-RS) designed to track the quality of contraceptive care at a population level and to be used by states, health plans, and federal accountability programs.
This website is intended to provide background on the development and endorsement of the PCCC and PCCC-RS as patient-reported outcome measures, support those who would like to use the measures, and provide additional resources.
UCSF is available to provide technical assistance to any organization interested in implementing the PCCC or PCCC-RS. Please contact [email protected], or Project Manager Alyssa Lindsey, for more information.
The Visit-Specific PCCC Measure
The visit-specific PCCC (referred to as PCCC) is designed to be used to assess the quality of care at the provider and facility level. The PCCC, shown below, is given to patients immediately after a contraceptive counseling visit. The measure has been validated in English and Spanish and was developed by the Person-Centered Reproductive Health Program, led by Dr. Christine Dehlendorf. No official approval from UCSF is required to use the PCCC, however our team is available to answer questions and provide technical assistance to any organization interested in implementing the PCCC. The Retrospective PCCC (PCCC-RS)
The Retrospective PCCC (PCCC-RS) is optimized for use by states, health plans, MCOs, federal accountability programs, and other organizations that collect retrospective population-level surveys of their patients or members.
The measure has been validated in English and Spanish and was modified from the visit-specific PCCC. No official approval from UCSF is required to use the PCCC-RS, however our team is available to answer questions and provide technical assistance to any organization interested in implementing the PCCC-RS.
For more information on how the PCCC-RS was developed and piloted, and for implementation guidance, please visit “The Retrospective PCCC” page.
